INSIGHT

Jurors may lack familiarity with shoulder anatomy, and the diagnosis of “Type 3 AC separation” does not convey the injury’s severity. The challenge was to visually demonstrate that this injury requires significant force to occur, as multiple stabilizing ligaments must completely tear for the clavicle to separate from the shoulder to this degree.

IMPACT

To facilitate a better understanding of the injury, a side-by-side comparison graphic was designed contrasting a healthy shoulder with a shoulder exhibiting a Type 3 AC separation. The healthy side clearly identifies the clavicle, scapula, and ligaments stabilizing the joint. The injured side shows these structures post-trauma, with a complete rupture of the acromioclavicular ligament and both coracoclavicular ligaments. By visually linking the torn ligaments to the clavicle’s displacement, the graphic enabled the jury to quickly comprehend both the mechanics and severity of the injury.
