Citigroup Wins Halt to $383 Million Arbitration Case
May 2, 2013New York – A New York federal judge on Thursday granted Citigroup Inc. an injunction from the bench, preventing the arbitration of a case brought by a Saudi investor claiming Citigroup and its affiliates wiped out $383 million of his family’s wealth, finding there was no agreement to arbitrate the dispute.
U.S. District Judge Louis L. Stanton ruled that Ghazi Abbar’s bid to arbitrate his claim against Citigroup affiliate Citigroup Global Markets Inc. under the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority fails as he wasn’t a customer of CGMI.
Citigroup is represented by Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy LLP partners Scott A. Edelman, Daniel M. Perry and Associate Jed Schwartz. The Impact Trial team consisted of Thomas Lee, Kerry Cashman, Randall Carter and Clinton Lam, each of whom worked closely with the defense team providing them with invaluable trial technology and litigation graphics consulting and support throughout the trial.
The case is Citigroup Global Markets Inc. v. Abbar et al., case number 1:11-cv-06993, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

We view your Request for Proposal (RFP) as a key component of the trial preparation process. Far too often, consulting firms and vendor services drastically understate the projected costs that will be incurred by your firm or your client. At Impact, our responding budget estimate is not prepared by a sales person. Our consultants carefully consider the information that you provide us and use their vast experience to furnish you with a sensible budget estimate that you can rely on.
We have supported trials and arbitrations in these states.
