INSIGHT

In its case against “Scooter” Libby, the government alleged that Former Vice President Dick Cheney told Scooter that Valarie Plame was an agent working for the CIA. The government also alleged that Libby then disclosed Plame’s identity to Matthew Cooper of Time Magazine (a count the jury rejected) and Judith Miller of The New York Times on July 12th.

In addition, Tim Russert of NBC testified that Mr. Libby had disclosed Plame’s identity to him days earlier (on July 10th or 11th). Months later, on “Meet the Press,” Andrea Mitchell of NBC tells Russert, “It was widely known” that Joe Wilson’s wife also worked at the CIA at that time.

In an additional twist of events, distancing Mr. Libby as the source of the leak, Robert Novak of The Washington Post admitted to being told about Plame’s identity by Karl Rove on July 11th.

IMPACT

This sample illustrates that Tim Russert’s story about Libby disclosing Plame’s identity to him on the 10th or 11th of July was unnecessary. The argument was artfully constructed here on a single animated PowerPoint slide.
